You don’t feel heard or understood anymore
Small things seem to turn into huge fights
You’ve started feeling more like housemates than partners
Physical or emotional intimacy has disappeared
Relationship difficulties aren’t always about one big event.
sometimes it can be years of having the same argument, not saying what you really mean, feeling rejected, misunderstood or taken for granted.
Couples counselling gives us a chance to slow things down and actually look at what keeps happening between you. Not to work out who’s right or wrong, but to understand what’s underneath the arguments, what each of you needs, and what needs to change if you want things to feel different.
How couples counselling can help
Every relationship is different, and so is what brings couples to counselling. You might know exactly what you want to work on, or you might just have a sense that something between you isn’t working anymore. This is a chance to slow things down and look at what’s actually happening, how you communicate, where you get stuck, what each of you is experiencing and, importantly, what you both want from here.
Understand what’s happening between you
Sometimes it’s hard to see a pattern when you’re right in the middle of it. We can look at what tends to happen between you with a little more space and curiosity, whether that involves communication, conflict, trust, intimacy, resentment, parenting or something else entirely.
Find different ways to communicate
You don’t have to become a couple who never disagrees.
We can work on ways to have difficult conversations without them becoming completely derailed, and help each of you communicate what you actually need the other person to understand.
Work out what comes next
There isn’t one “right” outcome from couples counselling. You might want to feel closer, rebuild trust, change parts of your relationship, or you might genuinely not know what you want yet. We can start where you are.
What to expect from couples counselling
01- We start with both of you
Your first session is a chance for me to understand what has brought you to counselling and hear from both of you. You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what the problem is or what you want to say, we can work that out together.
02- We look at what’s happening
As we get to know your relationship, we can explore what’s working as well as the places you’re getting stuck. We’ll look at patterns that come up, hear both perspectives and get curious about what might be happening underneath some of the harder moments.
03- We work on it together
From there, our sessions are shaped around what you both want to work on. That might include practical communication strategies, rebuilding trust, navigating conflict, reconnecting emotionally or working through a particular issue in your relationship.
You don’t need to wait until your relationship is at breaking point.
Couples counselling
with me
Inviting someone into the more personal parts of your relationship can feel vulnerable, particularly when there are things you’ve struggled to talk about together.
My role isn’t to referee your relationship or decide who is right. I’m there to understand both of you, without taking sides, and to help create conversations where each person has the opportunity to feel heard and understood.
I won’t simply sit back and leave you to navigate the session alone. I’ll ask questions, slow things down when needed, help you explore patterns that may be worth understanding, and introduce practical strategies where they’re useful.
I want counselling to feel human as well as purposeful. There is room for difficult conversations, honesty, emotion and also humour. You don’t need to arrive with the perfect words or present the best version of your relationship. We can work with what is actually happening between you.
Frequently asked questions
-
No. Couples counselling is for relationships at different stages — married, partnered, dating or long-term relationships.
-
You don’t need to have decided that before coming to counselling. Sessions can give you space to explore what has happened in the relationship, what each of you wants and what moving forward might look like.
-
That’s okay. You don’t need to arrive with identical goals. Part of our early work can be understanding what each of you hopes for and where those goals overlap or differ.
-
My role isn’t to decide who is right or wrong. I’ll want to understand both perspectives and make room for each of you to speak honestly about your experience of the relationship.
-
There isn’t a set number that suits every couple. It depends on what brings you to counselling, what you want to work on and how things develop along the way. We can review this together rather than committing you to a predetermined number of sessions.
-
It can provide a structured place to talk about what has happened and what each person is experiencing. Some couples come wanting to rebuild trust, while others aren’t yet sure what they want. We can work from where you are rather than assuming what the outcome should be.
You don’t have to have it all figured out before you book.
You might know exactly what you want help with, or you might simply know that something needs to change. Either is enough of a place to start.
